PhD position Inferring the dimensional of cognitive processing - scholarships-netherlands.blogspot.com

PhD position Inferring the dimensional of cognitive processing (1,0 fte), University of Groningen Netherlands
One of the major goals of psychological research is to elaborate latent processes that are necessary to explain specific psychological phenomena. Memory researchers, for instance, seek to determine what mental processes occur when remembering, or failing to remember, memoranda.
A fundamental question when analyzing behavioral data is how many processes are needed to explain the observed data. Is forgetting caused by interference alone, or do both interference and time decay play a role (Oberauer & Lewandowsky, 2008)?
Is there a separate perceptual process for face recognition, or do faces rely on the same perceptual process as all other stimuli (Loftus, Oberg, & Dillon, 2004)? These questions can be addressed through exploring the dimensionality of relevant behavioral data.
State-trace analysis (Bamber, 1979) is a technique used by researchers to make inferences about the dimensionality of data. The basic idea behind state-trace analysis is that data in two tasks, in which different variables have been manipulated, are plotted against one another. If a single, latent variable can explain performance in both tasks, then there must be a monotone curve that runs through all points. Although the logic of the state-trace method is fairly straightforward, formal inferential methods for state-trace plots- whether more than one dimension is needed to explain the data – have been slow to develop.
The goal of this project is develop Bayesian inferential methods for state-trace plots, especially ones which allow inferences across participants. At present, only inferences for single participants are possible, due to uncertainty about how to combine information across participants. Solving this problem in state-trace analysis would drastically increase the applicability of the method by enabling the accumulation of evidence across participants, and by enabling individual differences in processing to be studied.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in psychology, cognitive science, or statistics
- fluency in reading, speaking, and writing English
- solid background in research design and statistics methods with experience with Bayesian methods strongly preferred.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,042 gross per month in the first year to € 2,612 gross per month in the final year. The position will be on a temporary basis/four years. After the first year a formal assessment of performance will take place. If the outcome is positive, the position will be extended for the remaining three years. The successful candidate will be encouraged to learn Dutch for better social integration. The Faculty will pay for the necessary courses at the university’s language center.
Travel costs will be refunded.
Letters of application must include a statement of research interests and an academic curriculum vitae. Please provide the names of two academic references who may be contacted regarding your suitability for the position.

Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, PhD student “Dynamics of acidification in the North Sea”

Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, PhD student “Dynamics of acidification in the North Sea”
Sea surface water pH has decreased already by 0.1 unit, and based on atmospheric CO2 scenarios, it is projected to further decline by 0.0015-0.002 unit per year over the coming century. However, observations in the North Sea show stronger decreases of 0.02 unit per year. The North Sea is apparently acidifying 10 times faster than global ocean model predictions.
This may have effects on photosynthesis by algae and bio-calcification by shellfish. It is essential to verify if indeed acidification of the North Sea is going very fast. University of Twente Netherlands, PhD on a project involving blowing techniques for fiberglass cables

University of Twente Netherlands, PhD on a project involving blowing techniques for fiberglass cablesThe tube should protect the fiber against mechanical forces that may result from digging activities. In most cases, these tubular systems are put into the ground during construction of roads, sewers and the like. At a later stage the fiber is fed into the tube.
Currently the most widely used technique is blowing the cable with the use of an air compressor. With currently available technology, cable blowing at distances between 1 and 2 km is possible. Unfortunately, the distances to be reached strongly depends on the “gut feeling” of the operator. The process depends on many parameters, some of which are not always under control, such as environmental conditions as temperature and humidity. There is a strong need to model the behavior of a cable system to get a more predictable in-feed process. Such a model should make it also possible to apply more optimal, and thus more economical, cable constructions and pipe configurations.
Objective
This research focuses on understanding the process of blowing fiber cables in underground and above ground pipe systems and the influence of parameters involved on the process. To achieve this primarily all potentially influential parameters of the process should be investigated. Furthermore a model should be developed and test in a practical situations. The knowledge gathered should lead to better and more reliable advice on equipment use and related process settings. It should also lead to an improved understanding of adequate cable structures and optimal cable blowing equipment.
Requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher to work within the Design, Production and Management Department of the cluster of Mechanical Engineering. The candidate should have a master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Sciences or a closely related field. Both an experimental and analytical attitude is necessary. We seek for candidates with good team spirit, who like to work in an multi disciplinary oriented environment. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.

PhD position on Semantics and Verification of Accelerator Programming, University of Twente Netherlands - scholarships-netherlands.blogspot.com

PhD position on Semantics and Verification of Accelerator Programming, University of Twente Netherlands
In recent years, massively parallel accelerator processors, primarily GPUs, have become widely available to end-users. Accelerators offer tremendous compute power at a low cost, and tasks such as media processing, simulation, medical imaging and eye-tracking can be accelerated to beat CPU performance by orders of magnitude. Performance is gained in energy efficiency and execution speed, allowing intensive media processing software to run in low-power consumer devices.

Accelerators present a serious challenge for software developers. A system may contain one or more of the plethora of accelerators on the market, with many more products anticipated in the immediate future. Applications must exhibit portable correctness, operating correctly on any configuration of accelerators, and portable performance, exploiting processing power and energy efficiency offered by a wide range of devices.
The overall aims of CARP are to design techniques and tools for correct and efficient accelerator programming:

• Novel & attractive methods for constructing system-independent accelerator programs
• Advanced code generation techniques to produce highly optimised system-specific code from system-independent programs.
• Scalable static techniques for analysing system-independent and system-specific accelerator programs, both qualitatively and quantitatively.

The PhD candidate we are looking for is expected to work on the development of tools and techniques for correct accelerator programming. Within the consortium an intermediate programming language for accelerator programming will be developed. The PhD candidate is expected to develop a solid formal semantics for this language, together with appropriate verification techniques. An important focus of the verification work is that it will focus on bug finding, without too many false negatives, rather than on developing full correctness proofs. For the verification, it is expected that the logical basis will be permission-based concurrent separation logic. Sometimes the intermediate programming language will not provide the required efficiency, and programs will be written in a low-level language as OpenCL. Therefore, the verification techniques also will be extended to this lower level.

Within the context of the CARP project, the PhD student will work in particular on:
  • requirements analysis for accelerator programming
  • the formal semantics of an intermediate programming language for describing accelerator algorithms
  • developing logic-based verification techniques for this intermediate programming language, taking into account common accelerator programming patterns.
Requirements
An enthusiastic PhD student with an MSc degree in Computer Science (or an equivalent qualification). The candidate should have a thorough theoretical background, a demonstrable interest in program semantics and verification, and some knowledge about multithreaded programming (in Java/C/C++).
We are looking for a researcher with an independent mind who is willing to cooperate in our team. It is understood that he or she works on the topics listed above, and contributes to the expected deliverables for the project.  Further we ask for good communicative and good collaboration skills. Candidates should be prepared to prove their English language skills.
As a research outcome we expect publications, (prototype) tools, and a PhD thesis.
Starting date of the position: December 1st, 2011, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Conditions of employment
  • A PhD position for four years (38 hrs/week)
  • A stimulating scientific environment
  • Gross salary ranging from EUR 2042 tot E 2612 (4th yr) per month
  • Holiday allowance (8%), end-of-year bonus (8.3%)
  • Good secondary conditions, in accordance with the collective labour agreement CAO-NU for Dutch universities
  • A green Campus with lots of sports facilities
