PhDTalent Postdoctoral researcher Atmospheric modeling and remote sensing

PhDTalent Postdoctoral researcher Atmospheric modeling and remote sensing Netherlands
You will exploit how satellite-derived measurements of trace gases in fire plumes can be used to characterize biomass burning episodes. Specifically, you will iteratively:
1) Adjust an existing satellite-driven global biogeochemical model to better account for emissions of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide from biomass burning,
2) Use these new emissions estimates and a chemistry transport model to predict atmospheric concentrations of several trace gases, and
3) evaluate these predicted trace gases with those derived from satellite retrievals (SCIAMACHY, OMI, TES, IASI).  The overall goal will be to characterize fires in terms of magnitude and burning efficiencies on scales ranging from local to global, and to assess their atmospheric impact.
Requirements

We are searching for an excellent candidate with a PhD in atmospheric chemistry or physics and experience with chemistry transport models. The candidate should possess good communication skills to excel in a highly multidisciplinary and motivated research community. A proven track record of published and presented work is required.
Conditions of employment
The initial appointment will be for a period of 1 year. After satisfactory evaluation of the initial appointment, it can be extended to a total duration of 3 years.
You will be employed by the VU University Amsterdam but spend about 50% of your time at the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Department of Applied Physics of the Eindhoven University of Technology.
The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, and depending on experience, range from a minimum of € 2.977 gross per month up to a maximum of € 3.755 gross per month (salary scale 10) based on a fulltime employment, and includes a generous travel budget.
We also offer a pension scheme and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. You can find information about our excellent fringe benefits of employment – including holiday allowances of 8 % per year – at http://www.workingatvu.nl
Contract type: Temporary 1 year
The Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences of the VU University in Amsterdam and the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands) have a shared vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher. The position is offered for a period of three years, and is available immediately. The two research bodies offer top-level complementary knowledge on the modelling of the land surface and the atmosphere, aided by remote sensing.
The project is funded by a highly-ranked User Support Programme Space Research grant from the Netherlands Space Office to Dr. Guido van der Werf and Dr. Folkert Boersma.
For further information contact Dr. Guido van der Werf at guido.van.der.werf@falw.vu.nl or Dr. Folkert Boersma at k.f.boersma@tue.nl or visit www.falw.vu/~gwerf/ and www.knmi.nl/~boersma.
