2 PhD positions ‘NANOSTRUCTURED SOLAR-TO-FUEL DEVICES’ University of Twente - scholarships-netherlands.blogspot.com

Netherlands 2 PhD positions ‘NANOSTRUCTURED SOLAR-TO-FUEL DEVICES’ University of Twente
The positions are sponsored by FOM in the framework of the so-called TBSC (Towards BioSolar Cells) program. Four research groups are involved including the Molecular NanoFabrication (MNF), Mesoscale Chemical Systems (MCS), PhotoCatalytic Synthesis, (PCS) and the Optical Sciences (OS) groups. Nanofabrication of 2D and 3D p/n-Si structures, their chemical functionalization for enhanced light harvesting, and device implementation are important aspects of the work to be conducted by the first PhD student, who will be mainly active in the MNF and MCS groups. The second PhD student will mainly focus on catalytic functionalization of the p/n-Si structures, catalytic performance evaluation, optical characterization, and efficiency optimization, and will be active in the collaborative effort of the OS and PCS groups. The two students are expected to form a team within the project and to form an active part of the energy activities of the research institutes MESA+ and IMPACT.
These positions at the University of Twente provide challenging opportunities to carry out multidisciplinary research within the themes ‘Nanotechnology’, ‘Energy’, ‘Optics’ and ‘Catalysis’. We provide a unique environment with exposure to a multitude of disciplines in physics and chemistry for academically gifted and motivated students to prepare for a scientific career.
Requirements
Position 1: You are an enthusiastic student with an MSc degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or (applied) physics. You have a background, and a demonstrable interest in nano-structuring of devices, and preferably experience with clean room techniques. You are excited by the prospect of creating artificial solar-to-fuel devices.
Position 2: You are an enthusiastic student with an MSc degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or (applied) physics. You are preferably experienced in application of spectroscopic techniques (IR, Raman, fluoresence) to study optical and/or and catalytic materials, and are excited by the perspective of solving fundamental research questions.
We are looking for pro-active researchers willing to devote the first period of their (scientific) career on the topics listed above. We ask for good communicative and good collaboration skills. Candidates should be prepared to prove their English language skills. As a research outcome we expect (prototype) devices, publications, and a PhD thesis.
Starting date of the position: as soon as possible after June 1, 2011.
